Hi! My name is Katherine, and I’m a former full-time RVer! As an RVer and road trip enthusiast, I’ve had my fair share of both mishaps and unforgettable moments. Over the past decade of road-tripping with friends, my spouse, and even solo, I’ve learned tips and tricks and feel like I have it down to a science now.

By the end of this guide, you’ll have insights from all my lessons and a list of road trip essentials so you’re ready for whatever the road may bring you! Let’s dive in.

Vehicle Preparedness: Must-Have Road Trip Safety Gear

First things first: you must ensure your vehicle is ready for the road trip.

Whether you’re driving for just a day or making a cross-country trek, it’s essential to prioritize your safety.

Trust me, it’s not fun to be seven hours into a trip only to wind up with a dead battery and realize you left those new jumper cables at home in the garage.

Heading out on the road soon? Make a checklist with these items:

License/Registration/Insurance

Ensure all three are up to date, easily accessible, and somewhere safe. I keep all of mine in a zipped bag in my glovebox.

Roadside Emergency Kit

Car problems are inevitable, and there are still areas where cell service is nonexistent.

A simple yet effective roadside emergency kit includes at least a flashlightroad flares, and reflective triangles.

  • 🚗 【BE READY FOR ANY UNEXPECTED AUTO EMERGENCIES】Fully equipped premium quality car emergency kit and basic first aid accossories, enable you can get your vehicle back to the roadside safely, solve variety of roadside emergencies issues.

Jumper Cables / Portable Jump Starter

Even if you have AAA or roadside assistance, it can take hours for them to get to you, depending on where you are when you need them. Jumper cables are inexpensive and can be kept in the trunk. They really come in handy!

Note: Be sure to learn how to use them if you aren’t sure how.

Spare Tire

Many cars are no longer sold with spare tires—I learned this the hard way when I got a flat tire a mile from my destination. A spare tire can be bought very inexpensively from any tire shop.

Jack

You’ll need a jack to change the tire! (Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use one.)

  • 360 LUMEN WIDE BEAM - Featuring a CREE XP-G2 S3 LED for a primary output, the NU25 is capable of 360 lumen max output and 88 yards of throw, perfect for biking, jogging and trekking.

Cash

I’ve actually been to some remote gas stations while RVing around that only accepted cash. Luckily, we always kept at least a hundred dollars in cash in our safe and are so glad we did!

Electronics: Essential Road Trip Gadgets

These days, you can’t go anywhere without some electronics. But when driving, you may not have a way to keep everything charged. Even if your car can charge things, having backups and extras is a good idea.

Charging Cables

These days, it seems every device requires a different cord to charge. Before leaving, take a moment to look at your devices and ensure you have the necessary cord for each one.

You can always pick up new charging cords at a gas station along the way, but they are often priced higher there.

Portable Charger

I take a portable battery bank on every trip. It was a lifesaver when RVing, especially when we boondocked (off-grid camping).

These come in many sizes and capabilities. Mine doubles as a flashlight and holds a charge for a surprising amount of time. I charged my phone off it for days on end.

Cell Phone Mount

Chances are you’re using a map on your phone to navigate. So, mounting your phone to minimize distractions while driving is essential if you don’t have a vehicle with CarPlay or something comparable.

These can be installed easily and are even found at most gas stations!

The mount’s arms will close automatically, holding your device securely while you drive. Mount or remove your phone in seconds with the patented Easy One Touch Mechanism.

12v to 110v Inverter

If your car does not have an outlet, an inverter can be very handy, especially when working on a road trip. A 12v to 110v inverter can be used to plug electronics into the car, such as laptops or other tools.

My partner worked on the road at times while driving, and we had an inverter so his laptop could stay powered for long stretches of time.

Hotspot

If your phone doesn’t have a hotspot option and you would like to work on a computer from the road, pick up one of these devices before heading out on a road trip to ensure you have Wi-Fi on your laptop and other devices.

Navigation Tools

There are very few times when Google Maps didn’t work for me during a road trip, but I never say never.

There was a stretch of highway in Utah where I had no cell signal for nearly three hours. Luckily, we downloaded our map offline and navigated with no issues.

This brings me to some things to consider:

Map or Atlas

A map and atlas can be actual lifesavers. A map is essential if you’re driving in a specific area where your cell signal will be limited or you’d rather not use your phone battery.

I also always carry a map when hiking; I find it way more accurate than a satellite navigation system when it comes to nitty-gritty terrain.

Offline Maps

As I said, I’m a huge fan of offline maps! This is so simple to do – and not only is it great if you know you’re going into a region with limited cell service, but it saves data, too, even if you have service.

You can download anything offline from Google Maps, even pre-planned routes.

GPS

If you don’t plan on using your phone for GPS, you can buy GPS navigators for your car from many electronic stores, such as Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart.

These electronic tools run from a satellite and don’t need a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection, which can be ideal for remote driving locations.

  • 5" GPS navigator with driver alerts and travel data.External memory storage: This USB mass storage device is compatible with Windows XP or newer and Mac OS X 10.4 or later..Control Method:Touch.Special Feature:Touchscreen.

Comfort Items

What brings you comfort will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Personally, I like to be prepared for every possible scenario because when you’re away from home, there’s nothing worse than really needing something and either not having access to it or having to buy it new.

Sunglasses

I never leave the house without them, but when I go on a road trip, I always make sure to have a backup pair in my car.

Given how often I leave my sunglasses at restaurants, having a backup pair has proven to be a good strategy!

Blanket

A blanket can be lovely when you want to nap (as a passenger, of course!) or if you’re road-tripping during the chillier months. I keep a small fleece one under my seat, and it’s out of the way until I need it.

Pillow

Yet again, this one can be great if you’re with other people and taking turns driving. A pillow takes up some space, but if you are staying in hotels/B&Bs or camping along the way, a pillow comes in handy there as well.

Vehicle Sunshade

I learned the importance of a vehicle sunshade when I spent three months in Arizona. A quality sun shield can be the difference between getting into a scorching car and a car that is actually driveable!

Umbrella

I always keep an umbrella in my car, no matter what. If you’re driving through different climates, you’ll want to be prepared for any weather.

  • High-Quality Travel Umbrella: Our black umbrella for rain is crafted with premium materials, ensuring excellent quality and durability. Perfect for any weather, it's a must-have small travel umbrella for all occasions.

Painkillers

Painkillers may be in your first-aid kit, but it’s never a bad idea to also have a small bottle in the glove compartment.

Comfy Slip-On Shoes

A set of these is one of my favorite things. I never travel without my fuzzy slip-ons!

I love lounging in the passenger seat with my slippers on. Not to mention, it’s nice to use them in hotels!

Pee Funnel (For the Ladies)

Okay, hear me out—I once drove through the Great Smoky Mountains without a bathroom for nearly two hours. We had to pull off and wander into the woods to pee. It was not fun!

I really wish I had one of these pee funnels that Cindy swears by!

Hygiene Supplies

After 2020, it seems I always have hygiene supplies in my car now!

I often wonder how I functioned before having them all. It’s very convenient!

Mini Trash Can

A little trash can (cup holder or behind the front seats) is excellent to have. Snack wrappers, Kleenex, etc., can all go there, and you can dump them at the next rest stop.

Coupled with the collapsible design, you will greatly benefit from functional convenience of this auto trash container.

Dog Waste Bags

If you’re road-tripping with a dog (or a baby!), you know how essential dog waste bags are. They are great for keeping messes and smells contained until you can find a trash can.

  • DOG POOP BAGS: Our durable poop bags are a dog-walking essential. They are extremely portable and pair perfectly with the Earth Rated Poop Bag Dispenser for easy access while on the go.

Wipes

Wipes are handy for so many things, even cleaning up messes (like when I spilled ketchup all over the dashboard).

Hand Sanitizer

I love having hand sanitizer most when I use an outhouse while on the road in the woods or after filling up my gas tank.

Sunscreen & Lip Balm

Have you ever ended up somewhere way sunnier than you thought it would be and wished you had sun protection? Me too!

Stain Pen

Tight quarters inevitably lead to spills. Having a stain pen like this one on hand is another no-brainer.

Kleenex and Paper Towels

I keep tissues in the center console and paper towels in the back seat for eating and messes. They’ve come in handy more times than I can count and last a long time!

Food & Drink

The first thing that comes to mind when road-tripping is usually snacks, if I’m honest! I can’t drive even a few hours without some staple snacks. It’s great to stock up on your favorites, especially if you’re about to drive through a food desert.

Water Jug

Sometimes, we forget to stay hydrated when driving long distances. But it’s essential. I like having a reusable water bottle in the car and a gallon jug to refill the bottle when needed.

Water Bottle

A reusable water bottle is a staple for life, let alone for road trips. Get one you love, and take it with you!

Snacks

This can be whatever you want! Personally, I like to have a mix of sweets, salty foods, and fresh things like fruit.

Caffeine

Nothing is worse than starting on the road early and being sleepy. You can have caffeine tabs for emergencies when you feel like you might fall asleep on the road or have a coffee on standby!

Electrolytes

I’m a big fan of hydration powder packs that I can pour into my water bottle. Water is often not enough to hydrate you. Having electrolytes can also help you not cramp up when driving or sitting for long periods. It’s also essential when you’re going up in elevation!

Cooler

We usually keep a soft cooler bag in the backseat of our SUV full of cold food, like cut-up fruits and veggies and drinks from the gas station we may want to save for later! Coolers can also be great for kids’ snacks and medication storage.

For Big Groups

Are you traveling with more than a travel buddy? Consider these things for a more enjoyable trip!

Rooftop Cargo Carrier

Nothing is worse than a crowded car where no one has room to move their legs. I’ve been there, done that. And I wished we had a rooftop cargo carrier!

An alternate option is a hitch-style storage container.

Games

There’s always a point in the road trip when everyone starts to wonder, ‘Are we there yet?’ and that’s where games come into play. These can be physical games, like cards made for the car, or games on the phone, which I love personally.

Here are four great physical game options for under $10 each:

For Kids

I grew up doing very long road trips with my family and have many memories. Some are fond, and some I’d rather forget.

These things all make long car rides more enjoyable for the kiddos (and for the adults!)

Motion Sickness Aids

Are you Pregnant? Or maybe you or someone else going on the trip doesn’t love twisty roads? Or perhaps you have kids who get motion sick?

Then, it’s a good idea to stock up on motion sickness aids such as medicine, patches, glasses, or wristbands to help before it becomes an issue!

Toys

You know your little one best! Whatever will entertain them, bring it along!

These busy boards are popular for entertaining little ones on long drives and airplane rides!

Window Shades

Being in the direct sun with no escape is never enjoyable. I’ve burnt my arm through a car window on a long drive through the desert, so I get it.

A window shade is simple to install and inexpensive!

Tablet

A tablet loaded with games and shows can be a lifesaver for parents on long trips. (The portable charger can also come in handy here!)

Seatback Organizer

A place for all the essentials – wipes, snacks, medication- without having to sift through several bags.

For Winter

For those traveling in winter conditions:

Ice Scraper with Snow Brush

An ice scraper with a snow brush is invaluable in winter because scraping off ice with a credit card in below-freezing temperatures is never fun!

Sale

  • Paint Protection Design: The bristle head looks lighter in color and finer because we polished the head of the bristle, and each bristle head was split into several strands for being softer (not faded and worn) to avoid scratching the car paint.

Road Trip Tips

Before you get on the road, here are a few tips:

Check Your Vehicle

Do a full inspection of your car. Check the tires and air pressure, your fluids (windshield wiper fluid, oil), and make sure your heat and AC are working well.

Travel Safety

It’s a good idea to check your route ahead for safety precautions, especially for weather. Will you be driving through a snowstorm or rain? It’s best to be prepared.

Space-Saving Tips

You may be looking at this list and thinking, wow, this is a lot of stuff to pack into a car. However, it doesn’t have to be.

If you’re organized, all of this can fit in a few bags or even a backpack you specifically have for road trips. There are many compact versions of all these items for your road trip, especially if you’re trying to travel light or in a smaller vehicle.

For everything I need easy access to, I keep it in the center console or right behind my seat on the floor so I can access it safely. For the other things, I put them in the trunk. It keeps things organized and simple!

Roadside Assistance Plans: Are They Worth It?

Having additional roadside assistance for a road trip is a personal choice, especially since everyone’s insurance differs. I always have AAA for peace of mind, but that is the extent I do outside of insurance.

Check with your insurance company; they may offer roadside assistance, tire and windshield replacements, and even overnight stay coverage if you’re stranded. It’s good to know what coverage you have before hitting the open road!

Planning Your Road Trip

I’m a big believer in planning in advance for the optimal trip. It lessens the stress and chances of things being left up to…well, chance!

Accommodations

Reserve your accommodations in advance (unless you’re doing a free-flowing trip!). This can give you peace of mind and help you plan how far to drive in a day.

Itinerary

My partner and I are very much type-A planners. I print everything on an itinerary, AKA a spreadsheet, so I know where we’ll be on which day, where we are staying, what time we need to leave, how long we will be driving, miles, etc.

This helps me get the most out of the trip, especially if there are landmarks or things I really want to see along the way—diligent pre-planning makes me more likely to do everything!

Travel Apps

I love using travel apps. I rely a lot on gas apps, such as GasBuddy and Upside. I also use Expedia’s app to find last-minute hotel deals while traveling (if I don’t already have a place to stay planned ahead of time).

Activities to Enjoy: Fun Pit Stops!

This is arguably the BEST part of road-tripping. One of the coolest things is planning your route and looking at the map to see what’s along the way.

Chances are there are some real gems – from must-stop roadside diners to landmarks (Like Butch Cassidy’s home that we randomly came across in Utah!).

Make sure you factor in time for spur-of-the-moment activities and fun. I’ll never regret adding extra time to my road trip through Colorado – it allowed me to stop frequently to pull off the road and stare at the grandeur of the Colorado River!

Wrap-Up: Road Trip Necessities

Road trips don’t have to be daunting. They can be (and often are) a blast! All you need is some simple planning to feel ready for the open road.

Whether you’re headed out for a weekend getaway or on a cross-country adventure, a little preparation goes a long way, from packing smart to staying entertained, fueling up with good snacks, and ensuring your car is road-ready.

So grab your map (or GPS), load up your favorite playlist, and embrace the journey—because some of the best memories are made on the road. Happy travels!
